  • Quotes less than 40 words should be in double quotation marks; any dialogue should be in single quotation marks.

    • If a part of the quote is used outside of the main quote itself, the part should be in double quotation marks.

  • Quotes longer than or equal to 40 words should use block quote style per APA. Refer here for APA guidelines for quotations.

GRAMMAR

  • The possessive for singular people or objects should be indicated with an apostrophe and s.

    • This includes proper nouns, such as BTS’s, Dickens’s, etc.

  • Ellipses are used to mark the omission of text from a quoted source. Three dots indicate omitted words within a sentence. Four dots indicate that one or more sentences have been omitted. There should always be a space between the dots so that the ellipsis is written as “. . .” . Note: Do not use the character that Word autofills for ellipses: ...

    • When three dots are used to indicate omitted text from the beginning of a sentence, the first dot should immediately follow the quotation mark with no extra space added (e.g. “. . . [text here]”). When text is omitted at the end of a sentence, the last dot should be immediately followed by the closing quotation mark (e.g. “[text here] . . . “). When used to indicate text omitted from the middle of a sentence, spaces should be inserted before the first two dots and after the third (e.g. “[text here] . . . [text here]”).

  • Em-dashes are used to indicate interrupted thought or an explanatory aside. When an author uses a dash or dashes, use an em-dash with a space on either side.

  • En-dashes are used to indicate a range between things like dates, pages, or months. An en-dash is different from a hyphen (it’s longer). So in a range of pages in in-text citations or a bibliography, use an en-dash: pages 49–53.

LANGUAGE

  • American English is preferred, but British English should be maintained if the creator uses it. â€‹â€‹

  • Refer to the APA guidelines for unbiased language here, under the "Bias-Free Language" category. The use of singular “they” or “their” and the subsequent singular verb is accepted and should not be considered grammatically incorrect. Unbiased, non-discriminatory language is mandatory.

ACCESSIBILITY

  • Include descriptive captions for figures and tables, so that blind readers can use text-to-speech software or text-to-Braille hardware).

  • Use patterns instead of or in addition to colors for conveying information (color-blind users would then be able to distinguish the visual elements).

  • Numbers 1-10 should be written as words (e.g. one apple, three oranges).

COPYRIGHT

  • When using trademarked words or proprietary terms, creators must use the appropriate ™, ®, or © symbols.

  • If you include figures or tables that have already been published elsewhere, you must obtain permission from the copyright owner(s). Please be aware that some publishers do not grant electronic rights for free and that R3 will not be able to refund any costs that may have occurred to receive these permissions. In such cases, material from other sources should be used.

TABLES

  • Extensive numerical data should be presented in tables, rather than in the body of the text. Tables should be self-contained and concise, complementing (not duplicating) information within the text. All abbreviations must be defined in table footnotes. Legends must be included and should be comprehensive such that the table, legend, and footnotes may be understood without reference to the text. For the submission, tables must be inserted in the manuscript file in the locations where they are mentioned within the main text.

  • For further guidance, please consult the APA style guidelines here.

FIGURES

  • Creators are encouraged to send the highest-quality figures possible for peer-review purposes; however, a wide variety of formats, sizes, and resolutions are accepted. Legends must be included and shall be comprehensive such that the table, legend, and footnotes may be understood without reference to the text. For the submission, figures must be inserted in the manuscript file in the locations where they are mentioned within the main text.

  • For further guidance, please consult the APA style guidelines here
